THE WONDERING JEW

A Game

Nowadays I have the feeling that maybe a definition of my life can be compared to an arcade pastime.

The victim - me - a metal ball. The arena - a pinball machine.

A kick in the bum and off I go up around the big curve and going down from bumper to bumper, sometimes making some good scores off the bumpers but always the beeps, boops and bells and flashing numbers which are more or less background to the slings of fate.

Sometimes it is just a mediocre thing, eventually after a jolting journey the bottom of the table looms and a possible rest is in sight. I fall into the "fini" slot - game over.

Sometimes though this ball curves to one side or another, bounces off a noisy bumper and gets hit hard by the flipper down there and gets sent back up again sometimes almost to the top, to rattle scattle back down, bouncing here and there hitting bumpers at random it seems, lights and numbers, bells and whistles recording the statistics of life's game but not noticed too well by the ball rebounding on its way once again to the bottom.

Sure, I am the ball in that noisy game of life, kicked in the butt and shoved from one side to the other, causing racket of bells and shifting numbers but only feeling the bump and not really understanding reasons it is all happening.

Sometimes it is almost like some one has tilted the head of the table higher and the board is at a steeper angle, the downward course faster, bumpers hitting harder. The end result ? Dropping into the "fini" slot and resting until the game starts on its second course - adulthood - voila - a bump in the rear, same song umpteenth verse.

Maybe once in a while I can maybe understand a bump or two, lives touched along the way and lives touching mine, shared sorrows and jubilations and a dim realization of what life is all about.

But hey, its the only game in town, and someone has to put the Quarter in the slot. Duration of games depends on how many quarters are available for one thing.

One way or another life seems like A Game . . . . . . . . .
