LAGGING & LOLLYGAGGING

Things like this make me wonder just how much smarts our bunch have. Buried in the back of the Rocky Mountain News of July 26 is a small item tucked away in an unobtrusive place. In full :

UTAH

Salt Lake City

Radioactive tailings to be moved from river

"More than 12 million tons of radioactive waste will be moved away from the Colorado River, which provides drinking water for more than 25 million people across the West."

"The Department of Energy on Monday said the radioactive tailings about 750 feet from the river near Moab in southeastern Utah will be moved beginning in the spring of 2007, predominantly by rail, to a proposed holding site at Crescent Junction, Utah, about 30 miles from the Colorado River."

"The only way we can look at this is good news," said Energy Department spokesman Mike Waldron."

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Holy cow, those tailings have been there from when ? The 1970s maybe ? When were they mining uranium there ? A long time ago anyhow.

Makes me wonder how much of that stuff has leached out and already gone down the gullets of those who drink the water.

2007 ? Why the huge delay ? So that more folks drink the stinking witches brew ?

Wonder if it is on the Green River watershed (which flows into the Colorado River near there ? Don't think it is in Canyonlands National Park. Can't find Crescent Junction on my road map, nor is it listed in the index of same.

What's next on the disposal of the detritus of the "Cold War" and its consequent panic ? And, will the government cap the stuff, or leave it to blow from Crescent Junction to the east ? The victims of the ailments contracted while working at Rocky Flats are still waiting for help and the government in all its power and wisdom seems to be waiting for those folks to die off before they do much at all. Excuse being red tape, paper work and verification of cause. Heh . . . . .

So the feds in their infinite wisdom and power are LAGGING & LOLLYGAGGING . . . . . . . . . . .
