A MEDLEY

Items in today's Rocky Mountain "World Briefing" and "National Briefing," which are side by side.

Quote:

ITALY -- OFFICIALS' BIRD-FLU MIGRATION FEARS FAIL TO TAKE FLIGHT

ROME -- --"Defying the dire predictions of health officials, the flocks of migratory birds that flew south to Africa last fall then back over Europe in recent weeks did not carry the deadly bird flu virus or spread it during their annual journey, scientists have concluded."

"Officials had feared that the virus was likely to spread to Africa in the southward migration and return to Europe with a vengeance in the reverse migration this spring."

++++++++++++++

I hope the whole world should be so lucky. Also hope that immunization shots for bird flu are soon forthcoming and enough reaches the public that no more victims are laid low.

SEEKING TO ID SEX-TRADE CLIENTS

(A photo of an eye of a woman) "An Indian Kashmiri Muslim acivist of the Dukihtaran-e-Milat -- Daughters of the Faith -- weeps as she listens to a news conference Wednesday in which the organization urged the government to reveal names of people caught up in a prostitution scandal in Srinagar. Police in April found an alleged racket involving more than 40 women whose clients included politicians, bureaucrats, police officials and businessmen."

+++++++++++++

I have my doubts that the truth will out on this matter. Life doesn't usually work that way when the force behind the official farce is accused. AT least that is the way it looks to me. I wonder if anyone has an idea of whether those women and others in the area are forced laborers in the sex trade ?

+++++++++++++++

Then on the National side - quote (bolds mine):

UNANIMOUS VOTE: BUSH NOMINEE 'NOT QUALIFIED'

WASHINGTON -- "The American Bar Association rated one of President Bush's judicial nominee: "not qualified" Wednesday prompting a call from a liberal group for the president to withdraw the Mississippi lawyer's nomination."

"A panel of the nation's largest lawyer's group voted unanimously to give its lowest rating to MIchael Wallace, Bush's nominee for the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals."

The White House immediately disagreed with the ABA and rejected its rating."

++++++++++

It appears typical to me that the White House and its crew almost automatically reject anything that goes even slightly against their official policy of "mighty rule."

++++++++++

And then a bit of good news, quote:

DOLBY GIVES $16 MILLION TO START STEM-CELL CENTER

SAN FRANCISCO -- "Sound pioneer Ray Dolby has given $16 million to the University of California San Francisco, to start a stem-cell center that will perform research without federal funds, the school announced Wednesday."

"The Institute for Regeneration Medicine will conduct research on stem cells extracted from human embryos after Aug. 9, 2001 -- when President Bush cutt off eligilibilty for federal funding of such work."

"Dolby, founder of Dolby Laboratories, was listed as worth $1.6 billion in Forbes magazine."

+++++++++++++

Seems to me that there is great opportunity in the health field for research on stem cells, it looks to me that there are untold possibilities of use for good.

Many times it is more interesting to me to look in the mid-section of our paper. Much news, not deeply developed, which sometimes is a benefit. Long articles with much conjecture can be very confusing, so today it has been A MEDLEY . . . . . . . . . .
