Mates

Today Heather and I did as we have done from the time we first became acquainted, right after Columbus sailed west and discovered a land that was already there. Anyway, the weather was great early in the day, sun shining, gentle breeze blowing, birds twittering and scavenging fallen fruit, fast walkers passing us and later passing us again.

Heather and I did something we sometimes do. We relaxed and talked just for the fun of it and of the enjoyment we get out of similar things. The recap on yesterdays birthday party and the enjoyment we had with the family. Then, while walking we walked back along our own, personal memory lane as we went along the path in the park.

Then while sitting on a comfortable park bench in a shaded spot, quietly and sweetly talked of what we each want in the future, jointly ruling out the implausibles and agreeing on most things too.

All the while the nature of the city whizzed along the borders of the park, far enough that noise was almost undetectable and the gleam of windshields not very much of a distraction. It was as near to a peacful country side as can be found in the center of a metropolis.

We sat on several park benches along our course, each turned to the other, quietly talking and drawing comfort. Akin more or less like we had donned each other like comfortable bathrobes and were luxuriating in the warmth of them in a cold world in our little domain. The sense that we two are one, and were sheltered from the intrusion of the outside world was immense. For us, time had stopped a bit for us to catch up.

We also did a fair amount of exercise walking and went home to sip iced tea on the patio in companionable silence.

The rest of this day has been great, but an anti-climax compared to that wonderful time we had while together in the park today.

In truth, I believe that we are the best of mates.
