MOTHER, MAY I ?

Oh, man now we have a federal ID Law. In a box in yesterdays news article it says:

"WHAT IS REAL ID ?

The federal Real ID law sets a national standard for driver's llicenses and requires states to link their record-keeping systems to national data bases."

The article itself by Leslie Miller of The Associated Press

Printed in The Rocky Mountain News of Feb. 6, 2007 quoted here in full:

STATES IN REVOLT OVER NATIONAL ID STANDARDS

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- "A revolt against a national driver's license, begun in Maine last month, is spreading to other states."

"The Maine Legislature on Jan. 16 overwhelmingly passed a resolution objecting to the Real ID Act of 2005."

"Within a week, lawmakers in Georgia, Wyoming, Montana, New Mexico, Vermont and Washington State also balked at Real ID. They are expected soon to pass laws or adopt resolutions declining to participate in the federal identification network."

"It's the whole privacy thing," said Matt Sundeen, a transportation analyst for the National Conference of State Legislatures. "A lot of legislators are concerned about privacy issues and the cost. It's an estimated $11 billion implementation cost."

"The law's supporters say it is needed to prevent terrorists and illegal immigrants from getting fake identification cards."

"States must comply by May 2008. If not, driver's licenses that fall short of Real ID's standards cannot be used to board an airplane, enter a federal building of open some bank accounts."

"About a dozen states have active legislation against Real ID, including Arizona, Georgia, Hawaii, Massachusetts, Missouri, New Hampshire, Oklahoma, Utah and Wyoming."

"MIssouri state Rep. James Guest, a Republican, formed a coalition of lawmakers from 34 states to file bills that oppose or protest Real ID."

"This is almost a frontal assault on the freedoms of America when they requires us to carry a national ID to monitor where we are," Guest said." "That's going too far."

"Although most states oppose the law, some such as Indiana and Maryland are looking to comply with Real ID, Sundeen said."

"The issue may become moot if Congress takes action. Republican Sen. John Sununu of New Hampshire, along with Democratic Sen. Daniel Akaka of Hawaii, filed a bill last year to repeal the law. Sununu expects similar legislation to be introduced soon."

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I would still like to know what all information the black strip on the back of my Colorado drivers license contains. The thought of having a Real ID driver's license with a black strip containing ? what information ? Information entered into a national database ? I wonder what percent of my private life is already on a national data base ?

I am wondering if babies and senile oldsters will be required to have a Real ID card even though they don't drive ?

Seems to me that Homeland Security and other government entities are trying to use terrorist and illegal alien entry as an excuse to keep a thumb on us all the time.

Will it ever get to the point that one would have to show their Real ID license to cross state lines in a car ? Can you imagine stations set up on every road in our country that crosses into another state ? And who will man them ? Homeland Security ? What massive amount of tax money will that take ?

I can live with having to have a passport to leave and re-enter the our country, that does make sense to me.

But if the biggies are so concerned about illegal aliens coming into our country - - why are they not controlling our southern border, rather than rendering lip service to the concept ?

We also have our home grown terrorists who keep much of our populace fearful of going on the street most of the time. Are the powers that be doing an effective job of controlling that ?

So, will it soon be that to step out our door, we will have to ask, MOTHER, MAY I ? . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
