The 70k immigrants mentioned in that article are refugees (usually political refugees -- that is, their lives are in danger if they stay in their home countries). I believe that annually there are about one million legal immigrants in the U.S. each year. This is about four times volume of fifty years ago. The problem is, there are at least that many illegal immigrants also arriving each year. I frequently see estimates of 1.5 million illegals. Since they are breaking the law by being here, they tend to try to avoid being counted or coming to official notice.
