There seems to me to be only two things us little people can do on this: Dig a bit deeper into our pocketbooks to send aid. If everyone in the wealthy countries went without one cup of boughten coffee a week, or one burger, and sent the cash to the aid charities the problem of starvation would be ended there and then. That wouldn't help on the politico/military side. There we need, at election time, to ask those who seek our votes one simple question: "What are you going to do to help end poverty in the world?" And, if the answer isn't satisfactory, inform them plainly but firmly that they will not get our vote. Us little people can only do small things. If we do them together, they can make a big difference.

I think the U.N. is part of the problem, not part of the solution. The U.N. adminstration is a collection of corrupt bureaucrats who have spent years lining their own pockets. The "peacekeepers" they send in fail to keep any peace and fail to protect the people they are supposed to be protecting but instead they end up either aiding the thugs or they themelves actively abuse the refugees. As for the U.S. getting actively involved, look at what happend in Mogadishu the last time we send American forces into Africa under UN auspices... our troops were ambushed while other UN forces stayed safely in their forts and refused to come to the aid of the Americans who were slaughtered and their bodies dragged through the streets by the Islamic mobs. Yes, helping the people who are trapped in wreakage of these failed nations is exactly the kind of thing the U.N. was supposed to do but can anyone tell me of any U.N. intervention that ever actually succeeded? I think John is right on this; ordinary people just have to find private aid groups that actually solve problems and provide them with funds.

Very good points, I think. My question, what charity is above reproach and reliable ?

If you find one let me know....I was sponsering a child for one group who said we'd get mail sent dictated by the child to us and we would have our letters translated to them We did this for a few years. When by accident,I suppose In one letter ,we found 3 letters with Dear,,,,In 3 different Names Letters identical except for names signed at end telling what they did and how their day was We felt if they lied here, and didn't need to lie about getting personal letters in first place What else did they lie about....Maybe it was an office room some place and no children we just cancelled I look back now and wish we had checked it out and reported them But our kids were hitting teens and selfishly got wrapped up in our daily busyness and just wrote them off.and started sponsering our churches programs for overseas Most of us could afford something our poorest are richer than they are. I think thats only solution but like you said Doug "WHO"can we trust???
