I was reading about the building of the Panama Canal the other day, Doug, and wondering at the human suffering involved in its construction. Like you I'm happy that they'll be giving it a new lease of life and shall watch it with lively interest; I hope there'll be no repeat of the bad side, though.

Major construction projects used to exact a high toll in worker deaths. Consider how many died in building the Brooklyn Bridge or Hoover Dam. Modern technology combined with safety rules (at least in places like the U.K. and the U.S.) have ended those high death and injury rates -- but danger is always there.

It seems to me from what I have read, Yellow Fever played a great part in worker deaths too.
