I'm not much of a phone person, and it amazes me to watch all these people walking around with cell phones stuck to their ears. Email is my preferred form of communication.

Hand-cranked phones are something I only saw in movies but we didn't go to dial phones until I was in high school... until then you picked up the phone and the operator said "Number please" and you told her (four digits plus a letter if you were calling a party line) and she would contect you. My son is an adept channel-surfer -- I swear he can watch three shows at the same time -- changing channel at commercial breaks -- and not miss a thing. And I'll come into the room and we'll be having a casual conversation and then I'll notice that his thumbs are tapping buttons on a gadget in his hand and yet the channel is not shifting -- and I'll realize that he is having a texting conversation on his cell phone while talking with me and watching television, all without missing a beat. I can't do that. Hey Doug, thanks, you've just given me ideas that would be good for a couple of entries.

OK, Doug, let's get real. That was a humorous piece, but let's hope we're smart enough to make use of what we've been offered. Just because a bunch of people have made toys out of telephones -- so much for my teaching the kids "that is not a toy" -- doesn't mean that cell phones are a bad thing. All you need is one emergency to teach you that, whether you're the caller or the person called. When I worked for people who were always on the road, though needed in the office, a *car phone* was one of the best things I'd ever heard of. "Boss, I've got a problem here..." As always, you have the option not to answer.
