I had two neighbors, husb and wife. He was in kidney failure and needed a new kidney - which would be his second transplant. He (African-American) came from a large family and his sister was to donate hers to him. His wife (Caucasian) never thought to be tested. When the time came, his sister backed out and by that time it was critical he receive a new kidney. His wife got tested "just for the heck of it" and she matched better than anyone in his own family! She donated her "spare" kidney to him and it made all the papers. Who would have thought? Then he got ill again, and things happened... and they separated and then divorced. He died about 2 yrs ago in his house next door, and she remarried. She and her new husb have just moved back in next door. But she is without her spare now. I agree, that is the most selfless act on can commit.

That is true holiness, I think.

As a person in need of a kidney myself, this is such a wonderful story. Giving an organ is the gift of life. If only more people would donate as living donors those of us in need would have a much better chance of survival. But I understand how hard it would be to give up a kidney. Signing an organ donor card to give at ones death is also a remarkable selfless gift.I consider my sister a saint for wanting to give me one of her kidneys even though it didn't work out. I wish all the best to the two people in your story.

What a wonderful gift Karen is giving. People are inherently good but we only hear about the " bad " ones. I hope this story of love and generosity is told in a prominent way to show that there are brave people out there. Marie

I had thought about doing that, especially when thinking about Carol, but I asked my cardiologist about a year ago, and he said that there is no way that anyone would accept me as a donor... hell, they won't even take my blood anymore. But it's wonderful to know that there are people out there that can and will donate. Thanx for being here!
