The gap between theory and reality. In theory unions can be a good thing; in reality, most unions where I have been a member were worthless -- forced to be a member as a condition of keeping my job because I was not lucky enough to live in a right-to-work state where a union would have had to earn my membership by actually doing something beyond collecting dues. I can only think of one union I cared for and that was many years ago and I have no idea if they have changed or not -- the rest were merely machines for extracting my dues for the benefit of the union bosses.

Long time no see, Doug! I always say, "Right to Work" is a misnomer for "Right to get fired for any reason or no reason at all." Don't get me started!

Doug, I can remember my Dad telling tales in his later life about starting at Nooters Boilerworks in St. Louis in the late 30's, for 33 cents an hour. The union would come in and talk to them, but anyone who raised their hand that they were interested would somehow just disappear...I suppose they were let go. The union did come in eventually, and he always thought it was a good thing.
