I really enjoyed this...thanks for sharing! You've led me to remember spending time in a much smaller downtown in my own childhood. I'll have to write about it one of these days.

What a coincidence - my cousin and I were just sharing fond memories of OUR downtown.

You painted a picture for me -- I guess of many downtowns in many small cities a couple of generations ago. The feed store, however, was just a couple of blocks away, and we passed it whenever we went to buy the newspapers. I don't know if I ever went in there, but the aroma is still evocative. (Not for pet food so much; many people kept their own chickens, especially during the war.)

I could not only see the downtown, I could smell the leather. :-)

Thanks for your memories of downtown Denver. Your description reminded me a lot of my downtown in Norway, Maine. My favorite was the music store especially when I was old enough to buy 45 records and the J.J. Newberry's which was kind of like a 5 and 10 store. Newberry's also had a lunch counter with fountain-type drinks and quick foods. If I remember correctly the hot dogs were my favorites.

Lots of memories in the old home neighborhoods. I'd love to walk thru my old neighborhood in South St. Louis. Yes, there was a lunch counter and soda fountain in Woolworths', I believe, on Cherokee, the shopping mecca for us.

I wonder if my kids will some day recall nostalgic memories of shopping malls? Somehow it doesn't seem quite the same as a real downtown.
