My favorite of his is still the one about the gingham dog and the caloico cat. It was in the poetry book my mom read to me - the same one her father read to her. Not quite such a tearjerker - but I can see why Little Boy Blue speaks to you.

Now don't you go 'til I come, he said And don't you make any noise And toddling off to his trundle bed, He dreamed of his pretty toys. And while he was dreaming, An angel's song Awakened our Little Boy Blue. Now the years are many And the years are long, But the little toy friends are true. Faithful to Little Boy Blue they stand, Each in the same of place, Awaiting the touch of the little hand, The smile of the little face. And they wonder while waiting the long years through In the dust of the little chair, What has become of our Little Boy Blue Since he kissed them and put them there.

Yes, I too remember loving those poems as a child (and the callico cat and the gingham dog was one of my favorites).

Oh my, that one still brings tears to my eyes. I didn't dare pick it when we had to memorize a poem, for fear I'd disgrace myself in class. You're right--losing children happened so often back then. I have no doubt Eugene Field wrote this one from experience. I sure didn't know he was from Denver! Now I'll have to look him up and see what else I've forgotten since we read his poems in high school, hmmm--how could I forget, after only 55 years? That teacher was so mean, I thought she'd engraved things into my brain forever. Thanks for the memory, Doug. Denver sounds like it was such a great place to live! Joy
