Take a look at www . zillow . com if you want to find what that little house is worth now. You can put in an address and it gives you the house value. Scary stuff.

My ex-husband and I paid $20,900. for our house in 1979. 4 years later, in 1983 he sold it for $135,000.

Husband and I paid $25,000 for the Cheesebox about 35 years ago. Last tax bill showed it assessed for $125,000, which is supposed to be about 75% of its market value. I find myself wondering how much of these increases are "fake numbers," raised so that the agents' commissions are higher...

Housing markets don't always soar. We paid $50,000 for our house in Binghamton NY in 1980. In the early nineties it was assessed at around 90k (and insured for $120k). But then the housing market in that particular area crashed (a localized crash, housing prices elsewhere were climbing, including in R.I. where we were moving) and we did not get a single offer when trying to sell it for $75k, nor for $65k either... so we rented it... for less than the cost of mortgage payments + taxes. Finally in 1998 we sold it for $54,000. (Yes, and had to pay taxes on that "profit")
