The problem isn't good unions; the problem is corrupt unions where the labor bosses enrich themselves at the expense of the workers. This year the Democrats in Congress have been pushing to take the right to a secret ballot away from workers. They want a union to be able to impose itself on workers simply by getting enough signatures on union signup cards rather than having workers vote in a secret ballot. They know that when it is a secret ballot, workers frequently reject the union, so they want to remove the secret ballot so workers can be intimidated into signing up for the union.

I think Jim has it right: the problem isn't *good* unions. Having grown up protected by a union (even if it did have a rather unsavory reputation), I could never speak out against them. However, I think there are some who -- somehow -- managed to bargain themselves out of jobs by forcing the employers to take steps that may not be illegal but are immoral. I don't know the answer; I hate to think that maybe the unions need a stronger interest in the company itself.
