Grain alcohol is, I believe, ethanol. Wood alcohol, I think, is methanol. I know these better by their chemical formulas than their common names. Both are toxic to the human system, methanol more than ethanol (that's the stuff that people drink). During Prohibition, drinkers did not have ready access to ethanol and occasionally drank poisonous substitutes. Manufacturers of ethanol for other uses, such as antiseptics, added substances to "denature" it and make it unfit for drinking (though that didn't stop everyone!). Isopropyl alcohol is a chemical form of ethanol that can't be drunk. Pure ethanol must have a tax stamp to be legal, even if it's going to be used as a solvent. *** Isn't that more than you wanted to know. I learned this stuff so long ago it amazes me that I still know it.
